AI basics quiz questions and answers
20 questions on the AI words your team hears every day: machine learning, chatbots, prompts, deepfakes and the people who got there first.
Easy 20 questions 30 s each · about 16 min Checked against two sources

Run this at the start of an AI training session or a team meeting. It shows you what people already know before you get into the tools. The questions cover plain terms like machine learning and prompts, a bit of history from Turing to ChatGPT, and a few hard ones for the experts in the room. Twenty questions take about 16 minutes.
How to run it
- Play it before the training, not after. The results show you which terms need a proper explanation.
- Keep the leaderboard on the screen between questions. Ask the fastest player how they knew the answer.
- Questions 16 to 20 are the hard ones. Use question 20, the year the EU AI Act took effect, as your tie-breaker.
Questions and answers
1What does AI stand for?Easy
- AArtificial intelligence
- BAutomated information
- CAdvanced internet
- DApplied integration
Reveal answer
A. Artificial intelligence
AI is short for artificial intelligence. The term covers computer systems that do tasks we link with human thinking, such as learning, reasoning and understanding language.
2Which British mathematician proposed the imitation game in 1950, a test of whether a machine can pass as human?Easy
- ACharles Babbage
- BAlan Turing
- CAda Lovelace
- DJohn von Neumann
Reveal answer
B. Alan Turing
Turing described the game in his 1950 paper. A judge chats by text with a human and a machine. If the judge cannot tell them apart, the machine passes. We now call it the Turing test.
3In AI, what does ML stand for?Easy
- AModel logic
- BMemory layer
- CMachine learning
- DManaged learning
Reveal answer
C. Machine learning
Machine learning is the part of AI where a program learns patterns from data instead of following rules written by hand. Most modern AI tools are built on it.
4The 1956 summer workshop seen as the birth of AI as a field was held at which US college?Medium
- AMIT
- BStanford University
- CHarvard University
- DDartmouth College
Reveal answer
D. Dartmouth College
John McCarthy organised the workshop in Hanover, New Hampshire. His proposal for it used the phrase artificial intelligence, and the name stuck.
5Which IBM computer beat world chess champion Garry Kasparov in 1997?Easy
- ADeep Blue
- BWatson
- CHAL
- DBig Blue
Reveal answer
A. Deep Blue
Deep Blue won the six game rematch in May 1997 by 3.5 to 2.5. It was the first computer to beat a reigning world champion in a match under normal time controls.
6In 2016, DeepMind's AlphaGo beat the top player Lee Sedol at which board game?Medium
- AChess
- BGo
- CBackgammon
- DShogi
Reveal answer
B. Go
AlphaGo won the five game match in Seoul 4 to 1. Go has far more possible positions than chess, which made the win a landmark for AI.
7ChatGPT was released to the public in November of which year?Easy
- A2019
- B2020
- C2022
- D2023
Reveal answer
C. 2022
OpenAI released ChatGPT on 30 November 2022 as a free preview. It reached a huge audience within weeks and set off the current wave of AI tools.
8True or false: a large language model learns the patterns of language from huge amounts of text.Easy
- ATrue
- BFalse
Reveal answer
A. True
A large language model is trained on billions of words from books, websites and other text. It learns to predict the next word, which is how it writes its answers.
9What does GPT stand for in ChatGPT?Medium
- AGenerative pre-trained transformer
- BGeneral purpose technology
- CGuided prediction tool
- DGlobal processing terminal
Reveal answer
A. Generative pre-trained transformer
Generative means it produces text. Pre-trained means it learned from a big body of text first. Transformer is the type of neural network it runs on. OpenAI released the first GPT in 2018.
10In AI, what is a hallucination?Medium
- AA crash on the model's server
- BA model refusing to answer a question
- CA model stating false information as if it were fact
- DA model that answers very slowly
Reveal answer
C. A model stating false information as if it were fact
A hallucination is a confident answer that is wrong or made up. It is a good reason to check names, numbers and quotes from any AI tool before you use them.
11Training a model on examples that come with the correct answers is called what?Medium
- AUnsupervised learning
- BSupervised learning
- CReinforcement learning
- DTransfer learning
Reveal answer
B. Supervised learning
In supervised learning the training data is labelled with the right answers, such as photos marked cat or dog. The model learns to map new inputs to the right output.
12An artificial neural network is loosely modelled on what?Medium
- AA spider's web
- BA telephone exchange
- CA road network
- DThe human brain
Reveal answer
D. The human brain
A neural network is made of many small linked units, loosely based on the neurons in the brain. Deep learning stacks many layers of these units.
13Which company makes the Siri voice assistant?Easy
- AApple
- BAmazon
- CGoogle
- DMicrosoft
Reveal answer
A. Apple
Apple bought Siri in 2010 and built it into the iPhone the next year. Amazon makes Alexa and Google has the Google Assistant.
14True or false: a CAPTCHA test is designed to tell human visitors from automated bots.Easy
- ATrue
- BFalse
Reveal answer
A. True
CAPTCHA stands for Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart. The squiggly letters and the pick the traffic lights puzzles are the common forms.
15The instruction you type into a chatbot to get a result is called what?Medium
- AA token
- BA script
- CA prompt
- DA kernel
Reveal answer
C. A prompt
A prompt is the text you give an AI model to tell it what you want. Clear prompts with context and an example get better answers. Writing them well is called prompt engineering.

Does the team need technical knowledge for this AI quiz?
No. Most questions are about words people meet at work: machine learning, prompts, hallucinations and chatbots. Four harder questions at the end reward anyone who follows AI news.
How do we play it in a training session or a video call?
Press Go live and show the PIN or QR code on the screen. People join from their phones, answer within the timer and see the leaderboard after each question. The free plan covers 100 players in a session.
Do players need to install anything?
No. Players open the link or scan the code, type the PIN and a name, and play in the browser. Only the host needs a RiLiFi account.
Can I swap questions for ones about our own AI tools?
Yes. Use this template to make a copy, then add questions about the tools and rules your company uses, change the points, and delete anything that does not fit.
