How to make random groups in 3 steps

  1. Add your names. Type or paste them, one per line. A column copied from a spreadsheet works too, up to 1,000 names.
  2. Choose how to split. Pick a number of groups, or how many people go in each group. When the names don’t divide evenly, spread the extra people over the groups or put them in one smaller group.
  3. Make the groups. They show up as cards, one per group. Shuffle again gives you a fresh split in one click.

Present shows the groups full screen on a projector or a TV. You can also copy them as text, download a CSV or a PNG, or share a link.

Keep two people apart

Open Keep apart, pick two names from your list and add the pair. Those two always land in different groups. Add up to 20 pairs: two friends who chat all lesson, or two managers who should lead different breakouts.

If two people share a name, keep both. They show as Alex (1) and Alex (2) in the groups and in every download. If a name is in the list twice by mistake, Remove duplicates keeps the first one.

Ideas for classes, workshops and teams

  • Class groups. Split a secondary school or university class for group work, lab pairs or a debate. Mixing the groups each week means students work with new people.
  • Workshop breakouts. Set the number of rooms and split the attendee list. Present the groups on the main screen before people move.
  • Sports teams. Pick random sides for a five-a-side game or a club session. Choose 5 people per group and spread any extras out.
  • Trivia teams. Make teams of four to six for a quiz night, and turn on fun team names to give each table a name.
  • Meeting pairs. Split a team into pairs for one-to-one chats, peer reviews or a coffee rota. Choose 2 people per group.

Is it really random?

Yes. We shuffle the list with the cryptographic random source built into your browser, using a Fisher–Yates shuffle, and then deal the names into the groups. Every possible split is equally likely. The tool keeps no memory of past shuffles, so each one is a fresh draw.

With keep-apart pairs, we redraw until no pair shares a group, so every allowed split stays equally likely. With many pairs and only a few groups, that can take too long. Then we swap people at random until each pair is apart.

Run it live

Once the teams are set, run a quiz live in RiLiFi. Each team joins on one phone under its team name, and the leaderboard shows the teams after every question. See how a trivia night runs.

The free plan takes 100 people in each session and includes 50 live sessions in total. For more team names, try the trivia team name generator.

FAQ

Random group generator questions

Is the group generator free?
Yes. Make as many groups as you like. There are no ads and no paid version of this page.
Do I need an account?
No. The group generator works without sign-up. You only need a free RiLiFi account to run a live quiz, poll or wheel with your groups.
Are the names stored?
No. The names stay in your browser and are never sent to RiLiFi. If you use Share these groups, the names go inside the link itself. Anyone with the link can see them, and we still don’t store them.
How many names can I add?
Up to 1,000, one per line, each up to 200 characters. Splitting 1,000 names takes well under a second.
Can I keep two people apart?
Yes. Open Keep apart, pick two names and add the pair. Each pair always lands in different groups, and you can add up to 20 pairs. If the pairs can’t all fit, for example three people who must all be apart in two groups, the tool tells you.
Can I project the groups?
Yes. Press Present to show the groups full screen on a projector or a TV, and press Esc or Exit to go back. You can also download a PNG to put on a slide.
