How to host a Christmas quiz

Pick four or five rounds, about 40 questions, for an hour with breaks. Teams of four to six keep everyone talking, and nobody gets stuck answering alone. Read each question twice, then give the room a minute before you move on.

  • At the office. Mix teams across departments so people meet someone new. Run it as a live quiz on the big screen, and keep each round to ten minutes so it fits a lunch break or the start of the party.
  • With family. Pair children with grown-ups, and start with the films and food rounds, which younger players know best. Use the picker to draw questions at random between courses.
  • At the pub or club. Print the quiz with the answer sheet at the back. Hand out one sheet per team, swap sheets to mark them after each round, and read the scores out before the next one.
  • Online. Share your screen and let people answer on their phones, so nobody shouts over a laggy call. The leaderboard after each round keeps remote teams in the game.

How we checked these questions

Christmas quizzes online repeat a lot of myths, so we checked every answer against a source and listed it under its round. We wrote the questions in our own words and left out anything that changes every year, such as this year’s Christmas number one.

The rounds mix British, American and Australian Christmas, from mince pies and crackers to pavlova and Carols by Candlelight, so a mixed team has a fair chance.
