More this or that questions

How to play this or that

Read out two options and give everyone three seconds to choose. Speed is the point: nobody explains until everyone has picked. Then ask one or two people why, and move on to the next pair.

  • In a room. Call one wall “this” and the other “that”. People walk to their side, and the smaller side gets ten seconds to win others over.
  • On a video call. People hold up one finger for this and two for that, or vote in a live poll. Read the split out loud and go straight to the next one.
  • In class. Run five quick rounds as a warm-up. Then ask each student to find someone who picked the same as them at least three times, and sit together.

This or that or would you rather

This or that is faster: two words, one second, no story. Would you rather questions are longer and lead to more debate. Use this or that to wake a room up, and would you rather when there is time for reasons.

For longer choices, see our would you rather questions. For open questions with more than two answers, try the icebreaker questions.

Ask it live

In RiLiFi, a this or that question becomes a poll with two answers. People join from their phones with a PIN or QR code and tap their pick. The bar chart on the big screen moves as votes come in, so the room sees the split straight away.

FAQ

Questions about this or that

What are this or that questions?
Quick questions with two options, such as “Beach or mountains?” or “Early bird or night owl?” Everyone picks one straight away. They make a fast warm-up for a meeting, a class or a party.
How do you play this or that?
Read out two options and give people three seconds to choose. In a room, people move to one side; online, they vote in the chat or in a live poll. Ask one or two people why, then go to the next pair. Ten rounds take about five minutes.
What is the difference between this or that and would you rather?
This or that uses short options and quick answers. Would you rather questions describe two situations and lead to longer debates. Both work as a 2-option poll.
Can I play this or that on a video call?
Yes. Ask people to type 1 or 2 in the chat, hold up one or two fingers, or vote in a live poll so the result shows on screen at once.
How does the random picker work?
Press Give me a question. The picker shuffles the questions with the random source built into your browser and shows them one at a time, with no repeats until you have seen them all. Press Full screen to show the two options on a projector. It all runs in your browser.
Can I run this or that as a live poll?
Yes. In RiLiFi, make a poll with the two options as answers. People vote from their phones and the bar chart on the big screen fills as votes come in. The free plan covers 100 people per session.
