How to roll dice in 3 steps

  1. Pick how many dice, from 1 to 10. Use the plus and minus buttons or type a number.
  2. Pick the type. d6 is the dice you know from board games, with dots. d4, d8, d10, d12 and d20 are the game dice with numbers on them.
  3. Press Roll, or the Space bar. The dice drop into the tray, tumble and settle. The total is written large under the tray, with each die next to it.

The last 10 rolls stay in a list under the tray, so a disputed roll can be checked. Press F or Full screen to put the dice on a projector or a TV. Esc brings you back.

Are the dice fair?

Yes. Each die asks your browser’s cryptographic random source for a number, the same source websites use to make security keys, and throws away the few values that would make low faces slightly more likely. Every face has exactly the same chance: 1 in 6 on a d6, 1 in 20 on a d20. The dice you see tumbling only act out the numbers that were already chosen.

That makes these dice fairer than most real ones. Cheap plastic dice have air bubbles and rounded corners that favour some faces. These have none.

Ideas for board games, classes, teams and events

  • Board games. Lost the dice, or playing over a video call? Share the tab. Two d6 for most family games, one d20 for role-playing games.
  • Classroom maths and probability. Roll two dice 50 times and tally the totals. The class sees 7 come up most and 2 and 12 least, and can work out why. For ages 13 and over.
  • Team games. Roll to set how many points a question is worth, how many seconds a team gets, or who answers first.
  • Pick a random group number. Made 6 groups with the group generator? Roll a d6 to choose which one presents first.
  • Events and icebreakers. Number six icebreaker questions and roll for the one each table answers.
  • Role-playing games. d20 for the roll, d4 to d12 for damage. Up to 10 dice at once, each one shown, with the total added up.

When the dice have chosen the order, run the round in RiLiFi. A live quiz gives every question its own timer and a speed bonus, with a leaderboard the whole table can see. See the live quiz.

Need a number outside 1 to 20? The random number generator takes any range. To pick who starts, the coin flip is faster still.

FAQ

Dice roller questions

Are the dice really random?
Yes. Each die comes from your browser’s cryptographic random source, with the few values that would skew the result thrown away. Every face has exactly the same chance, and no roll depends on the one before. The animation only shows the result.
What is the average roll?
Half the sides plus a half: a d6 averages 3.5, a d20 averages 10.5, a d4 averages 2.5. Two d6 average 7, and 7 is also the most common total, because more pairs of faces add up to it than to any other number.
Can I roll a d20?
Yes. Pick d20 under Dice type. d4, d8, d10 and d12 are there too. They show a number rather than dots, and the colour of the die changes with the type.
How many dice can I roll at once?
Up to 10, all of the same type. Each die is shown on its own and the total is added up for you. The last 10 rolls stay in a list under the tray.
Is the dice roller free?
Yes. There are no ads, no sign-up and no paid version of this page. Roll as often as you like.
Can I use the dice full screen?
Yes. Press Full screen or the F key. The tray and the total fill the screen on a dark background, and Esc takes you back. On phones that don’t allow full screen for web pages, it fills the browser window instead.
