New Year's Eve trivia questions and answers

20 questions on how the world rings in the new year: the Times Square ball, Kiribati's early midnight, Danish chairs, Brazilian white and more, with answers.

New Year's Eve trivia quiz illustration

A round for the last party of the year, an office do in the week before, or a family waiting for midnight with nothing good on TV. Most of your room will get the easy ones, like the colour Brazil wears and what Danes jump off at midnight. The harder questions travel to Ethiopia, Japan and the crystal ball in Times Square. Every answer is checked against two sources. Twenty questions take about 16 minutes.

How to run it

  1. Start it about an hour before midnight so the last question lands before the countdown. If you play it on New Year's Day instead, it works just as well over brunch.
  2. After question 6, the Danish chair jump, ask people what their family does at midnight. You will hear traditions that are not in any quiz.
  3. Questions 16 to 20 are app only. Question 20, the two years without a Times Square ball drop, is the tie-breaker.
