Video game trivia quiz illustration

A round for a quiz night, a games night or a team social where half the room grew up with a Game Boy and the other half with a phone. It starts with the names everyone knows, Mario, Sonic and Pac-Man, moves through the big launches and ends with questions only the real collectors get. Twenty questions take about 16 minutes.

How to run it

  1. Mix the teams by age. The players who remember Pong and the ones who play Fortnite each know half the answers.
  2. After question 9, ask the room to name every job Mario has had. Carpenter, plumber, doctor and referee usually get the discussion going.
  3. Questions 16 to 20 are app only. Keep question 17, the company behind Space Invaders, as your tie-breaker: almost everyone guesses wrong.
